The documentary is on animator Jules Engel who is best known for his work on Fantasia, Bambi, and as a member of the legendary animation studio UPA which i'm sure you're aware is responsible for the aesthetic of a LOT of todays cartoons. And, fun fact, He's the real-life person that Mr. Magoo was based on. It's very important, not just to the memory of Engel, but to our entire craft, that you support this documentary and all others like it.

Animation, as an art form has been swept under the rug by supposed "high-art" historians and as such we just don't have as deep a well of history to pull from as say, a painter would. When cannot let our heritage vanish. Getting this documentary made will help show today's animators WHY cartoons have become what they are today, and give them a firm historical reference point that will hopefully keep the stagnation of our art form to a minimum.

And if you'd like to donate, it doesn't have to break the bank. If you can't afford 10 bucks, no sweat. Making-of video for my student film. It's 2D with many 3D tricks, so I'd say it's 2. I wanted to get everyone on reddit a Christmas present but I made this. I'm not trying to supersede individual postings of animated shorts nor is this some sort of subtle commentary against re-posts, I just wanted to share my running list of animations I think are really good and organize them for you.

There are quite a few gems in here, many of which you may have already seen probably posted here many, many times too be sure but there are most likely many, many more you have not seen or have missed. Hopefully this will make a handy cheat-sheet for you or will at least help you pass some of that inevitable holiday boredom time each short is between 1 min and 30 min long and would take over 30 hours to watch them all in one sitting.

These are just simple thoughts and rough notes I wrote after and sometimes during watching each short for the first time or having watched it again after many years. Hopefully the notes will be helpful though some probably won't be. I decided to include them since most give a decent enough description to help you determine if you've seen something before or to help you decide which ones you might want to watch. Some links may not be available outside of the US sorry about that , however if you can provide a secondary link please do so.

There are also hardly any music videos on this list since I'm not too knowledgeable about them. Hope you enjoy the films and happy holidays! One of my favorite sequences one of many with a little motion type and info graphic style animation. Hope you like it. Share and enjoy. I might be late to the party, but this guy has spent nearly a decade working on a stop-motion robot porn. It looks amazing. In depth, behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of Disney's "Kingdom of the Sun" later butchered by execs and retitled,"The Emperor's New Groove". My first go at building a stop-mo puppet head using the latex build-up technique, let me know what you think! Would anyone who wants to do this themselves like to ask any questions? I was thinking how I could have done with knowing a lot of things I know now a couple of years ago, with all the mistakes I made in the beginning, and I thought, with online self-publishing and the advent of crowdfunding, there must be other people doing this too.

I just finished my first complete projection mapping animation which I had been working on for the past year. Eveready Harton in Buried Treasure , considered to be the first pornographic cartoon, created for a private party in honor of Winsor McCay. Sadly, it was banned. I did send a Request for Reddit letting them know that this was a mistake, and i hope it'll get un-banned soon.

Great responses! Listen, hey. I was thinking that maybe for the first time for this jam, it could be held in some simple place, maybe like on Reddit? Like, if we create a sub-reddit called "AnimationJam" i think it could be good as any place to organize the jam, as well as vote on the theme. Hey Animators! Are you familiar with [Ludum Dare? Maybe a week is better? I don't think that more themes are needed Of course i know that with such strict time limit you might not get a lot of footage done, complete with score and voice acting, but that should not matter.

Heck, even if you manage to do just an animatic or a pencil test, even that will count as an entry. What matters is proving to yourself that you can create under strict limits. The Idea is to get you to do something improvisational with the amount of expertise you've gathered during your years of making animation. I admit, it's very hard for me to do animation, because i don't want to do it alone.

I hope that with this jam i might be able to find people who love the artform just as much as i do, thus helping me and other people find new friends and sources of inspiration. How shall we get this thing started? Also: feedback and suggestions for improvement are appreciated!

Or… so I hear. For me there's little worse than realising the storyboard is flawed midway through production. That document is your co-director and when it's imperfect or illogical it's like having a saboteur in an executive position.

Watch Cartoons with the Sound Off. I recommend series 4 of Venture Bros the latest series, 5, has less action for top-notch editing, and also new Adventure Time. Cinematic Technique. If you're boarding the thing yourself you may want to understand setting, flow, and general theory. As such, learn about cinematic technique. Shots, terminology, etc. If that happens, ask an experienced storyboarder for advice or research the specific kind of shot you're having trouble with.

Leave your animatic for a day or two, then come back to it with an axe. If something feels slow, adds nothing to the plot or just plain sucks somehow, get rid of it. Study Directors. Studying the trademark techniques of master directors a swift google search will get you there offers a sort of cheat code list for making shots interesting. Plumb the work of classic directors, not just modern ones, as directors like Jacques Tati and Sergio Leone were really on the money even way back when.

There are lots of ways to achieve viewer immersion. In the animatic stage have After Effects make the camera move - even if it's only slightly - when a character walks, climbs, flies, etc. It makes you feel more like you're actually there. We didn't get chance to achieve much immersion at all due to inexperience, and I really regret it. Everything you can do to suspend the viewer's disbelief ought to be done.

It's less jarring. Receiving a new face is an event, and having dialogue arrive at the same time can be overwhelming to the viewer. If you're bringing a new character into play, see if you can't make it so we hear their voice before they appear on-screen.

It also adds light suspense. In fact, having gentle suspense throughout is a great way to keep the work engaging. It's kind of cheap, but little cheap moves are simply meeting the audience's expectations of engagement. Honestly the primary things people want to see in the mainstream are sex, violence and wealth so if you're in cinema with a "high art" approach you'll have trouble getting stuff picked up.

It's a hard pill for a young director to swallow but it's true. To me there are four aspects to cinema. What you can see, what you can hear, what you interpret, and - a lesser aspect - what is not there. Foley sound designers are great, but if you can't find one then get yourself to an online sound archive and use the search function like a poet.

In animation voice actors are the difference between having something watchable and something unwatchable. Put an ad out on VoicesPro for a "lo-paid" job. If you're at university you have a recording studio, or else they may have their own, or you know a band who have their own connections and they owe you a favour or something.

I've recently been laid off from my job and I want to pursue a career in animation however I feel that my skillset is kinda rusty would like some more education in it. Before I look into my options at a community college I was wondering if anyone here has had education from Animation Mentor.

I understand that most of the benefits of education come from what you put into it, however a lot of for-profit schools tend to have shoddy programs that don't really prepare the student for the career in their chosen field. In an animated project, multiple animators work side-by-side and it's difficult to promote one of them through your blog, twitter, interviews etc in particular as being shit-hot, but with Adventure Time bringing animators to the fore 'James Baxtor the Horse' being a good example there's a chance the public can start to appreciate the animators we already love, or the teams of animators we love, like they do other artists, musicians and writers.

Note that this thesaurus is not in any way affiliated with Urban Dictionary. Due to the way the algorithm works, the thesaurus gives you mostly related slang words, rather than exact synonyms. The higher the terms are in the list, the more likely that they're relevant to the word or phrase that you searched for.

The search algorithm handles phrases and strings of words quite well, so for example if you want words that are related to lol and rofl you can type in lol rofl and it should give you a pile of related slang terms. Or you might try boyfriend or girlfriend to get words that can mean either one of these e.

Please also note that due to the nature of the internet and especially UD , there will often be many terrible and offensive terms in the results. There is still lots of work to be done to get this slang thesaurus to give consistently good results, but I think it's at the stage where it could be useful to people, which is why I released it.

Special thanks to the contributors of the open-source code that was used in this project: krisk , HubSpot , and mongodb. Finally, you might like to check out the growing collection of curated slang words for different topics over at Slangpedia.
