Review "This book offers a historical overview in the form of a personal memoir Carter may thus be said to be both a source for the historian and himself a historian of the Israeli-Palestinian confrontation.

This little book merits a reading on both counts. Carl Brown, Foreign Affairs "A provocative and all too accurate diagnosis of why the Israeli-Palestinian impasse still festers twenty-five years after [Carter] left the White House Timely and refreshing for its candor. Wilcox, Jr. Carter brings to the table a unique credibility.

Israel and Palestine seem further apart than ever, with Palestinians having few, if any, rights. Jimmy had asked for Palestine to be self-directing.

That is far from the case. Back to the book, Jimmy explains the situation in the Middle East clearly and includes history to help explain the current situation. President Carter wrote this book 11 years ago. So it is dated. But his goal - Palestine Peace Not Apartheid - is a most worthy goal Since the influence of AIPAC has not diminished in the past 11 years, it is hard to imagine that our political will will change our counter productive foreign policy.

Jimmy Carter is a great man and did not kill anyone while President of the US. He said that only 16 years in the life of our country have we not been at war, and 4 of those years were during his Presidency. It is so important to have peace in Palestine and in the world. Interesting and very well researched book. The former President not only takes you on a journey of several decades but includes the history and how his outlook on the situation derived from personal contacts and experiences from both sides.

The subject matter is one of the most complex in our world society and thus we of North America should make ourselves familiar in a first hand way. I want to note that the news media people try to represent the problem but they are not seemingly flexible, or au faits of the saga. The book under review is however much more clear with respect of the past and present aspects of the dillema. It follows that President Carter can describe the actual state of affair at a unusual level of perception and it is the most revealing document I have perused since the s.

He rightfully describes the isreali USA backed authoritarian mode which is in effect in most ways has destroyed the ability to function of the Arab community, rockets and bombs notwitstanding. And he has a very refined way of representing the real nature of Headline for your review the ways of life of the populations in most true and informative terms.

Having read that book, one then has a non- CNN version and the President explains the facts of an unnaceptable situation of unfair occupancy and total supervision of the Arab population. Psalm 's exhortation, "Pray for the peace of Jerusalem," must have weighed on the mind and heart of former President Jimmy Carter as he presents his case, and does it well, in "Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid. First, the title is too provocative.

What Carter does get right easily outweighs the flaws, in my opinion. He presents the Israeli-Palestinian conflicts and peace efforts over the past generation within the context of personal experience. Here is a person who has rubbed shoulders and negotiated with all the key players and has several tangible results to prove it, not the least of which are the Camp David Accords of Less than a handful of Americans have done more than Carter to forge a two-way street through the Arab-Israeli conundrum.

Carter's book is balanced. As for the criticism that he whitewashes Yasir Arafat, I can't say that I buy it. He presents Arafat as a man who had some interest in peace maybe , but with plenty of warts. Note: The criticism is well taken that Carter seems to fall for Arafat's dubious claim that he never called for the destruction of Israel.

Aside from that slipup, Carter shows us an Arafat who was untrustworthy more often than not. But then Arafat was not the only problem. Too many of the key players on both sides have been either stubborn or hotheaded. That is why, after so many years, it is still two steps forward and three steps back. Cooler heads simply must prevail or very soon there will be a large-scale regional war with global implications. This is no joke! Carter has his hand on the pulse of this vortex of conflict and when he speaks, I listen.

The bottom line: Carter says what needs to be said. Perhaps much of this is common knowledge outside the USA, but sheltered Americans need to know it too. The Palestinian plight and grievances are real, as well as Israel's basic need for national security. Both must be reconciled. In light of this sobering reality, the time for petty potshots is over. The stakes are high, and so I urge anyone who wants to be fair-minded about this to put your biases aside, read Carter's book, and pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
